New Puppy? You’ll Need Puppy Supplies!

So you’ve made the decision to bring home a new puppy! Congratulations! You have taken the first step to having a friend for life that gives unconditional love always! Now that you’ve made that decision, there are a lot of things to think about. Where will your new friend sleep? What puppy supplies will you need to have on hand before that happy day when you finally bring your puppy home?

Here is a puppy supplies checklist for you:

Food and water bowls:

Do some research into how much your puppy needs to eat and what kind of food you’ll be feeding. Find a stainless steel or ceramic bowl in the correct size and buy two, one for food and one for water. Stay away from plastic as it can harbor bacteria that are harmful to your pup.

Collar and leash:

The collar and leash you choose should be appropriate for the size puppy you are getting. You’ll want to have at least the collar ready with an ID tag attached for when you go to pick up your puppy. A four- or six-foot leash is necessary to have with you also, as you’ll need to take your pup from your car to your home and he’ll probably have to go potty in the interim.

Crate for crate training (if you choose):

This too will need to be sized correctly for your new puppy. Since the puppy will be sleeping in his crate you will need a comfortable, washable crate pad as well. He’ll definitely have accidents in his crate, so a machine-washable and dryable crate pad is best. You don’t need anything fancy or over-stuffed, but a crate pad will help prevent pressure sores and will make your pup more comfortable.

Puppy toys:

Get a variety of puppy toys – chew toys, squeaky toys and plush toys – but don’t bring them out all at one time. Show your pup a couple and let him choose which he’d like to play with. Save the chew toys to redirect your pup when he chews on something inappropriate when he starts teething. When he’s in his crate, a tough rubber chew toy like a Kong will keep him occupied and stimulated.

You’ll have all the puppy supplies you need by adhering to this list, but you’ll find many more to purchase as your new puppy becomes a part of your family and your heart!
